Marc Tessier - From Hospitality to Humanity

After two decades in hospitality, Marc Tessier set out to build a more balanced and meaningful career - one where he could use his creativity, attention to detail, and love of service to make a real difference. With the support of a Workforce Navigators scholarship and the community-focused Admin Academy, Marc found not only the structure and encouragement he needed to thrive, but also a new passion for using Salesforce to drive positive change in the nonprofit world.

Marc Tessier - A Success Story

Marc Tessier has worked in hospitality on and off for over 20 years. From studying architecture to mastering cocktail competitions, he’s always been driven by creativity, attention to detail, and service. But the reality of working nights in hospitality no longer fit the life he was building with his long-time partner and their dog.

“I’ve done 5 a.m. bar closes more times than I can count,” Marc shared. “I met my partner after returning to hospitality when lockdown eased, following my first attempt to leave the industry by studying UX. I wanted a change, something without endless late nights. Building a life with my partner made me want a more balanced and sustainable career. I wanted time for us and our dog.”

Passionate and hardworking, Marc finished a UX bootcamp just before COVID, but the pandemic disrupted his plans, and after working on a few projects Marc realized it wasn't quite thr right fit. A former coworker suggested Salesforce, so he tried Trailhead and self-paced platforms. They gave him a solid start but lacked the structure and accountability he needed.

“I needed structure, a teacher, and the best possible learning environment.”

Marc knew that to break into the Salesforce ecosystem, he needed more than YouTube videos, and online self taught courses. “Self-paced worked at the start, but when something is brand new, you need someone to walk you through it. I needed someone to help me break it down question by question.”

Marc shared that he knew his own personal learning style, and how he’d realised over time that he knew that the key to his success was to empower himself by joining a course where he could learn 1-2-1 and even better in a group setting where he could hear other people’s questions, ideas and learn in a group setting with people who shared a common goal.

He kept hearing about Dave Massey’s Admin Academy and was drawn to the stories of others who had gone through it. “Dave had the best reputation by far. I followed him for a long time and knew his one to one course was exactly what I needed. But financially, I couldn’t make it work.”

That changed when Marc was awarded a Workforce Navigators scholarship, an opportunity he describes as life changing.

“It was a massive relief. The scholarship removed the financial stress and gave me the freedom to focus more fully on learning. For the first time, I could really dedicate time to building a new career with full structure and support. And the support goes even further, from exam vouchers that ease the financial burden, to the guaranteed 1-2-1 mentorship after we pass the admin exam, and even the opportunity to connect with you to tell my story, and have you write individual stories for us to help extend our reach. This kind of support I've never had before.”
A Learning Experience Built Around the Student

The Admin Academy is designed to meet learners where they are, there are no expectations, no pre-study needed, the course is designed for people who are absolute beginners, or someone who had some Salesforce knowledge, something Marc found incredibly valuable. The course is designed to meet people in a way that suits them, with multiple resources so no matter what type of learner you are, the course can help you learn in your best way.

“It’s not just a few videos and a checklist. Dave gives you slides, recordings, transcripts, short explainer clips, long-form recaps, cheat sheets, everything. And if someone in class wants to go deeper on a topic, he builds new slides or cheat sheets for the very next session. It’s so responsive. You really feel like the course evolves to support your learning.

”This custom approach is exactly what the Workforce Navigators Programme stands for: removing barriers, creating opportunity, and empowering learners with practical tools to succeed in tech.Marc loved how Dave broke complex concepts into smaller, manageable chunks. “He teaches with intention. He repeats things on purpose and explains why he’s doing it. He’s embedding it in your brain so you retain it when it matters, like during the exam.”

A Supportive Group That Grows Together

From the start, Marc noticed how Dave created a supportive, positive space. “He brings the group together with energy and care. Everyone’s included, and he always checks in with how we’re doing, what we need more of, and what’s working, as we go through each session no question is too small, too big, and everyone works as a group to ensure they share ideas and areas they need extra help with.”

Marc’s cohort of fellow students has become a key part of the journey. “Everyone in the course is so positive and collaborative. People ask great questions that make you think differently. It’s not competitive. We’re genuinely cheering each other on.”

The live classes and Slack channel created a real sense of momentum. “There’s no wasted time. The group moves with purpose, and you learn from everyone around you. I don’t dread class. I actually look forward to it.”

Preparing to Pass His Admin Academy Exam

During his time working for Salesforce, Dave realised he needed to design a course that would help people become the best Salesforce Admins possible, having realised that sometimes it wasn’t easy for people to grasp how to use Salesforce in their organisation, or picture it being used in the real world.

“What makes Dave’s teaching stand out is that he’s not just preparing you to pass an exam, he’s preparing you to use Salesforce in the real world so you can reach your full potential and be the biggest asset possible to your future team and colleagues.

Every lesson connects theory to practice, showing how you’d apply what you’ve learned in an actual job.

He walks you through real scenarios, explains the reasoning behind each solution, and helps you think like an admin, not just a test-taker. You leave class understanding how to solve problems, build with confidence, and support a real organisation. This course isn’t about memorising answers, it’s about building lifelong skills that will serve you long after you’ve passed the exam.”

A Future That Combines Passion and Purpose

Marc has always volunteered with animal charities, but now he’s ready to make it his full-time mission. His goal is to use Salesforce to support nonprofits, especially those focused on animal welfare and wildlife protection.

“I want to use my skills to help organisations save time, streamline their work, and focus their energy where it matters most. Every minute saved with automation is a minute gained for fundraising, care, and impact.”

Having spent years optimising bar operations, Marc knows the value of small efficiencies. “Shaving seconds off a cocktail workflow made a huge difference in hospitality. In the nonprofit world, shaving off hours of admin could be life changing.”

He’s now actively connecting with Salesforce nonprofits in Toronto and beyond, ready to bring his skills and passion to a cause that matters.

“If I could do this every day, I would.”

When asked to describe the experience, Marc doesn’t hesitate.“He’s approachable, positive, and always makes time to help you understand. If you don’t get something, he’ll find a new way to teach it. It’s been the best learning experience I’ve had in any subject.”Marc now feels fully prepared for his exam, thanks to Dave’s structure, mock assessments, and expert guidance. “We walk through every question slowly, with clear explanations. There’s no rush. It’s built to make you succeed.”His advice for anyone thinking about joining the programme?

“Do it. If you want a real learning experience that supports you and gives you the tools, confidence, and community to succeed, this is where you need to be.”
Passing his Salesforce exam

A week after finishing his Admin Academy course, Marc sat his Salesforce Admin Exam and passed first time! Congratulations Marc!!

Marc shared how passing his exam and the experience feels:

“Passing the Certified Salesforce Administrator exam on my first attempt feels incredible! The journey wasn't straightforward, after earning my Associate certification in late 2023, several personal challenges interrupted my progress. Despite the setbacks, I refused to abandon my goal and I got there with Get Force Certified and the Workforce Navigators Programme!

Returning to serious study after a long break definitely tested my discipline, but once my life stabilized, I committed fully to daily focused learning. The determination paid off, and now I'm officially a Certified Salesforce Administrator.

I've recently passed  my Platform App Builder certification, and plan on tackling a few more in the coming months. I’ve become truly passionate about Salesforce and I’m excited to see how this new career path unfolds.”
